Programming a Sea-Doo DESS Key

Owning a Sea-Doo personal watercraft is an exhilarating experience, but it comes with the responsibility of managing your watercraft keys efficiently. Sea-Doo watercrafts manufactured from 2009 to the present use a state-of-the-art "RFID claw" style key FOB, while those built in 2008 and older are equipped with the classic "bucket" style. In this guide, we will focus on the RFID claw style key programming process, ensuring you have the knowledge to keep your Sea-Doo adventure afloat.

Understanding the Two Key FOB Styles

Before diving into the programming process, it's crucial to differentiate between the two key FOB styles Sea-Doo utilizes. The RFID claw style, introduced in 2009 and still in use today, features an advanced Radio-Frequency Identification system. These newer keys are also referenced as DESS keys, which stands for Digital Encryption Security System.

Sea-Doo DESS Key Programming How-To

On the other hand, the older "bucket" style, found in Sea-Doo watercrafts built before 2009, has a more traditional design. This document will focus on the 2009 and newer keys. Note that keys can be programming for Normal Mode, Learning Mode, or Rental Model.

Programming RFID Claw Style Keys

  1. Gather Your Tools: To begin the programming process, ensure you have your Sea-Doo watercraft, the new RFID claw style key, and the existing programmed key. You will also need one of our marine diagnostic scan tools.
  2. Memorize The Current Key: The first step is to connect an existing key to the Sea-Doo. You then run a command inside the diagnostic scan tool to memorize the current key.
  3. Clear The Ignition Key: After memorizing the current key, the next step is to remove the old key and insert the new Sea-Doo key. You then run a command that clears the new ignition key so that it is ready to be written.
  4. Programming Mode: In this step we now program the new Sea-Doo key using our marine scan tool.
  5. Testing: To ensure successful programming, start your Sea-Doo watercraft using both the existing and new keys. If both keys start the engine, the programming process is complete.
